Your Tech Career at Kaufland e-commerce

Kaufland e-commerce is the team behind five international online marketplaces. We have also created our own innovative software solutions, making this the perfect place for new talents looking to launch their careers in the tech and IT industry. 

 

Our company offers a wide range of positions from Information Security Manager to Data Scientist, as well several areas of software engineering. There are several development opportunities and career paths available. For example, our colleague Felix has progressed from a working student to a Senior Frontend Engineer. In an interview, we spoke with him about the work and career opportunities in Kaufland e-commerce’s Tech and Product department. 

Felix, you started with us as a working student and are now a Senior Frontend Engineer. Can you briefly outline the stages of your career journey? 

 

I first heard about Kaufland e-commerce through the “Capstone Project” programme, which I was involved with during my studies in business informatics at the University of Cologne. This project allowed me to start my Kaufland e-commerce career as a working student. My first position was in the Direct Sales area, where I worked on the CRM system. After completing my bachelor’s degree, I was taken on as a Junior Frontend Engineer and simultaneously switched to the Tech Customer Service team, which develops the internal ticket system for processing our customer inquiries.  

After about two years, I moved to the Frontend Foundation team, where I still am today. We take care of the frontend architecture, establish company-wide coding standards, and ensure that all frontend developers have the right tools available and their work is made as easy as possible.

Three aspects that make working in the Tech & Product department of Kaufland e-commerce particularly special for me are: 

  1. Agile working and team culture: We rely on modern agile methods such as Scrum or Kanban to respond flexibly to challenges and strengthen collaboration within the team. As a team, we can freely decide which agile methods we want to use to find the working style that suits us the most. 
  2. Innovative technologies and exciting projects: Whether it’s about further developing our platform, using cloud technologies, or implementing new features – there’s always room for creativity and technical excellence. 
  3. Individual development: Through regular training, conferences, and team exchanges, everyone can continuously expand their skills and develop themselves both professionally and personally. 

What qualities should an applicant in this area bring with them? 

 

I love seeing applicants who enjoy working in a dynamic and agile environment and have fun developing innovative solutions for complex challenges. Team players who are curious about new technologies and want to constantly develop themselves fit particularly well with us. What are your top three tips for prospective applicants in our Tech and Product department? 

 

I would give them the following three pieces of advice:  

  1. Show curiosity and passion: Let us see that you are motivated to constantly learn new things and are enthusiastic about the latest technologies and trends. 
  2. Show us your problem-solving approach: Consider how you would tackle technical challenges and be prepared to explain these in an interview or coding challenge – we’re interested in your thought and work processes. 
  3. Be authentic and team-oriented: We’re not just looking for technical talents, but also people who fit well into the team. Be honest about your strengths and weaknesses, and show that you enjoy working with others to achieve common goals.
